The Sandhurst Diocese Winter Sleepout is an annual event held at different schools each year, aiming to raise awareness of people experiencing homelessness and the surrounding issues. This year, we are fortunate enough as a Galen Community to be hosting the Diocesan Winter Sleepout here on our school grounds on Thursday, August 6th during national Homeless Persons Week (HPW).
Homeless Persons Week came about from various churches and missions running winter vigils to remember people who had died on the streets. These vigils were normally held in the first week of August as it is the coldest time of the year and when most people were likely to be overcome by the elements. Over the years, more churches became involved and in 2007 Homelessness Australia (then the Australian Federations of Housing Organisations AFHO) began coordinating it as a national awareness week.
Students and staff are invited to come along and share a simple meal of soup and bread with students from Galen and other Catholic secondary schools in the diocese. They will hear from guest speakers from Vinnie’s who work to support those experiencing homelessness and other local agencies that deal with youth issues, and undertake a number of short workshops.
Permission forms have gone out and need to be returned by Thursday July 30th.
