Music is an important aspect at Galen Catholic College with students regularly performing at school assemblies, masses and concerts within and outside of the school. Students participate in a wide range of musical groups including three concert bands, a jazz big band, choir, production bands and smaller ensembles. Lessons are taught to students in the concert band program on flute, clarinet, saxophones, trumpet, trombone, bass guitar and percussion. Students can also participate in lessons on drums, piano, guitar and voice taught by visiting teachers.

All Year 7 students participate in classroom music and students from years 8 – 12 can elect to study music up to VCE level.

Musical activities and fundraising are supported by the Friends of Music Support Group which is a volunteer group of parents and friends.

The Friends of Music formed in 2009 to assist Galen’s Director of Music, David Ashfield with achieving his vision for the school’s Concert Bands. Their role is to raise funds to purchase instruments or to assist in hosting performances by the Band. This friendly group of parents or friends meet once a term in an evening at the school to decide what we can do to support the needs of the bands. Anyone is welcome to join the group. If you would like further information please contact the President, Maureen Flanagan on 03 5728 1164.
