The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a qualification aimed at those who want more of ‘a hands on education’ developing skills for further education, training or employment and those students not intending to go to University.
The course is made up of :
• Literacy and numeracy units from VCE/VCAL
• Industry skills from VET/AS-bA/Traineeships
• Work related skills
• Personal development skills
Note: VCAL programs must include either a AS-bA or VET program.
This certificate is explained more fully in your “Where To Now” booklet. Read it to get a fuller understanding of the way this certificate works and the benefits it has to offer students looking for a more practical “hands –on” education.
At Galen College we are looking to offer VCAL at Foundation and Intermediate levels to year 11 students and Senior level to year 12 students. If we have sufficient students Galen will develop a course to suit those students.
At Galen, we have had students complete VCAL certificates with an emphasis on these careers :

A full VCAL program would entail literacy & numeracy, work skills, personal development, industry skills & 1 VCE subject. Students would generally spend 1 day a week in the workplace (sometimes 2) and 4 days at school.
NOTE: This type of programme suits those students who are not aiming for a university course. Students could go onto TAFE or in Year 12 complete an Advanced Level VCAL. Students can change from VCAL to VCE, or VCE to VCAL at change of semester or change of year. Any VCE units completed in VCAL, count towards the VCE and vice-versa.
