HOME ROOM TEACHERS

The Homeroom teacher is expected to cultivate the Galen ethos. They are expected to develop meaningful relationships with their class and establish a group spirit. To this end the homeroom teacher should be welcoming, approachable, and exude a sense of safety and trust.
The role of the Homeroom Teacher involves activities relating to the organisation, welfare and happiness of students in the Homeroom and includes important administrative tasks, guidance and discipline and liaison with parents, YLCs, Directors and the Well Being team.

1. HOMEROOM ASSEMBLY

Keep daily attendance records.

Follow up on past absences
Contact parent/YLC if a perceived problem exist

Daily Prayer


Read out Daily Prayer on Bulletin from laptop or printed hard-copy.
Alternatively student may do this.

This should be carried out by the homeroom teacher, not a student, as
Many important messages which impact on the activities of others will be
on the Bulletin.

Uniform Check


The Homeroom teacher will monitor the correct wearing of the College uniform
This includes the checking of hats during Term 1 and Term 4.
For on-going uniform non-compliance a ‘Uniform Notice’ should be sent
Home and if necessary a follow-up with parent contact or report problem to YLC. 
 
Other Responsibilities

From time to time other administrative tasks will arise (eg Homeroom
competition involvement raffles, school photos, immunisation programs)
which require action in the Homeroom Assembly,

2 SCHOOL RULES

The Homeroom teacher is expected to consistently communicate, reinforce and apply the College rules. Student boundaries and expectations should be discussed and explained as situations demand. Punctuality should always be a focus.

3. REPORTS

The Homeroom teacher writes a semester Home Room report.  This necessitates being aware of the extent of the student’s involvement in College activities.  A pro-forma is available to assist in summarising this information.Interim or progress reports may be required from time to time.
The Homeroom teacher needs proof-read, seek amendment if necessary, collate subject reports into a folder and distribute reports at the end of each semester.

5. ASSEMBLIES

Homeroom teachers must organise and/or assist the RE teacher in the preparation of a scheduled Prayer Assembly
Homeroom teachers (7-10) should assemble with their class at a designated point outside the stadium prior to whole school assemblies (e.g. Opening Mass, Anzac) enter the stadium with their class and sit with the group during the assembly. 

6.  SEATING PLAN

A seating plan for a class is seen as appropriate from time to time. The homeroom teacher is responsible for devising a seating plan often in conjunction with the YLC.

7.  PARENT LIASON

Homeroom teachers ideally should be the first point of contact for parents in relation to a range of issues including discipline, uniform, welfare, academic progress. In consultation with the YLC, Home Room teachers may interview students and/or parents as a result of their own concerns or because of teacher requests.  Only after discussion at Home Group level has been unsuccessful in bringing about desired changes should the problem be handed over to the YLC, Director, Deputy Principal or Well Being Team

8.  PERSONAL CONCERNS

The Home Room teacher takes a special interest in the welfare of each student in the group. If a student has a problem, the Home Room teacher should quietly and patiently counsel the student until the problem is solved.  Quite often is may be necessary to consult the YLC, Well Being team or other members of staff for advice and assistance in the problem-solving.The Home Room teacher should be aware of relevant personal problems or difficult home circumstances.

9.  SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Home Room teachers are encouraged to organise and support class activities which foster a sense of identity, class unity and College spirit.

10.  HOME ROOM

The Home Room teacher is responsible for the presentation of the Home Room. Posters, displays of student work, etc. all enhance the appearance of rooms. Any damage, vandalism, breakage, etc. should be reported as soon as it is noticed to the YLC, Director or Deputy Principal.


11. LOCKERS

The Homeroom teacher should record lock numbers at the beginning
of each year, ensure locks are properly used during the year and
ensure lockers are free from damage, graffiti etc. Misuse or vandalism
is to be reported to YLC, Director or deputy Principal.

12. EXTENDED HOMEROOM

To develop a constructive sequence of activities for extended Homerooms
independently and in conjunction with YLCs and Directors ( eg study skills,
homework timetables, Homeroom competitions etc)
