Science

The study of Science at Galen provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of important science concepts and processes. Science study also enable students to develop a knowledge of science’s contribution to our culture and society, and its applications in our lives. The curriculum supports students to develop the scientific knowledge, understandings and skills to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues and to pursue science-related careers.

From 2012 our courses will follow the Australian Curriculum model, which covers the biological, chemical, physical, Earth and Space sciences. Students develop the ability to be able to select and integrate the scientific knowledge and methods needed to explain and predict phenomena. Students also learn to apply that understanding to new situations and events, and to appreciate the dynamic nature of science knowledge. At Galen, Science is compulsory from year 7 to 10 and students can choose to do Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Psychology in VCE.

In year 8 we offer Science investigations as an elective, in year 9 students can engage in Forensic Science and in year 10 students can study Psychology or Biology.

We endeavor to give students the opportunity to develop their interests in Science through activities such as the Science And Engineering Challenge, the Science Competition, Siemens Science Experience, Cows Create Careers and the National Youth Forum.

Galen has five well-resourced laboratories which enables our science classes to be conducted in a real lab environment.
