On Wednesday 13th June, 39 budding Year 9 Forensic Science students from Galen College attended the Gene Technology Access Centre sited on the University High School campus in Parkville, Melbourne. This is a specialist centre for Genetics education, situated across the road from Melbourne University. While there, the students were involved in a variety of activities including a lecture that introduced them to the basics of genetics and how blood groups are determined as well as how forensic investigations can be aided by genetics. Students participated in laboratory work that reflected the information they had gained in the lecture and they also had the opportunity to use sophisticated science equipment. Students were guided in practical tasks by scientists and PhD students from Melbourne Uni. This gave them a great chance to discuss what research the scientists were working on. Several students were inspired by the day and enjoyed having the opportunity to sample university life.
