On Wednesday the 26th August, Galen Catholic College welcomed 200 Grade 6 students (Galen College Year 7 2016 students) from across 24 primary schools (Appin Park
Primary, Beechworth Montessori, Beechworth Primary, Carraragamungee Primary, Chisholm St. Primary, Edi Upper Primary, Glenrowan Primary, Milawa Primary, Our Lady’s Primary school, Rutherglen Primary, Springhurst Primary, St. Bernard’s Primary, St. Joseph’s Primary Beechworth, St. Mary’s School Rutherglen, St. Mary’s School Corowa, St. Patrick’s Primary, West End Primary, Whitfield Primary, Yarrunga Primary).
It was great to witness so many students arrive at their new secondary school with a mixture of optimism, happiness and nervousness.
Grade 6 students were greeted by a number of Galen Junior School staff such as Mrs Wendy Chuck (Junior School Director) Mr Jim Samon (Yr 7 Co-Ordiantor) and Mr Patrick Arcuri (Deputy Principal).
All Grade 6 students completed a number of numeracy and literacy tests in the Galen Catholic College stadium. These tests are important as they provide a very comprehensive account of a students abilities across English and Mathematics. The tests provide Galen College with additional information and a platform to better understand the learning needs of each new individual student starting at Galen College. Year 7 English and Mathematics teachers use the is additional information along with information gleaned from parents and students during the earlier interviews, and the detailed information provided by the primary schools through their reports and assessments to better prepare for the commencement of Year 7.
Year 7 & 8 Junior school leaders socialised with and accompanied the new Grade 6 students throughout the day, in particular during recess and lunchtime. Grade 6 students also enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by the Galen Catholic College canteen.
Overall, it was a very exciting day for all involved and the Galen Junior school eagerly awaits for the Grade 6 students to return for their transition and orientation days in term 4 this year.
